The Education System(Faculty of Pharmacy)
Dean Doctor of Pharmacy
KOYAMA Susumu
In 2006 Daiichi University of Pharmacy underwent the change from a four-year pharmaceutical program to a six-year clinical program, and our first graduates went out into the world in the spring of 2012. This new program aims to foster pharmacists with a higher level of clinical ability as health care professionals. Along with clinical knowledge and skill, however, actual medical treatment also requires communication ability, ethics, and humanity. A pharmacist must reassure a patient about his disease like a doctor or nurse, and communicate with them as would a staff member of a medical team in the hospital. This college has implemented the following programs in order to meet these needs in health care. The basic pharmacy courses of the first three years of the Pharmacy and Kampo Pharmacy programs provide students with the core knowledge and skills to be later practiced in the pre-clerkship and clerkship experiences. Preparation for the national exams in the fourth and sixth-year of study focuses on accuracy and competency through individualized instruction and guidance by the academic faculty. The rigorous training leads to professionalism and experience for future clinical practice. The new advanced specialist programs of the fifth-year will allow students to further pursue their interests in hospital, community pharmacy, Kampo, pharmacy practice overseas. Extra study through lunch time seminars and off-campus camps give the students the boost to graduate and be licensed within the six year program of study.
1.Higher Professional Education through Collaboration between the College and Hospitals
The purpose of the program is to educate students to be specialized in pharmaceutics. To this end, this college collaborates with two hospitals, helping our students to both accumulate considerable practical experience and absorb clinical knowledge from visiting professors from the hospitals.
2. Practical Experience Education for Fostering Warm-Heartedness
This college offers freshmen opportunities to understand the psychology of patients through hands-on experience in hospital pharmacies, in community pharmacies, and in pharmaceutical companies. These experiences help the students in their fifth year with a longer clinical internship to be mindful of the needs of others and their feelings.
3. Character-Building Education through Communication
This college offers the students many different occasions to have good student-student or professor-student communication, such as the Friendship Seminar in April, various club activities, the college festival in fall, the tutorial system (the small class-teacher system), and the attachment-to-laboratory system, enabling them to communicate with the staff as well as other students. These occasions help the students cultivate their own character by working hard in a group setting.
4. Introductory Education in the Basic Subjects of Pharmacy
Freshmen and sophomores are given lectures on fundamental pharmaceutics, wherein a unique introductory education provided by former high school teachers helps them to understand the fundamentals better.
5. Recurrent Education for the Graduates
This college periodically holds recurrent seminars for the graduates, and gives the latest information regarding the ever-changing fields of medical and pharmaceutical sciences. This program enables a deeper bond between the college and the graduates.

Tutorial System
Under the system each member of the teaching staff of major subjects has charge of several students from the first year to the third one respectively, and will move up with them for three consecutive years. This makes it easier for each student to work hard at his studies, have a consultation with his tutor or enjoy his college life without any disturbance.
Students’ Career Course
With employment many company explanation meetings are held on campus, and painstaking guidance is given by a vocational advisor. The students can be actively involved in the front lines of the community: hospitals, pharmacies, the pharmaceutical industry, public health centers, blood centers, etc.
The Education System(Faculty of Nursing)
Train superior registered nurses, public health nurses, and midwives who are competent in pharmacotherapy.
The Faculty of Nursing, Daiichi University of Pharmacy, began in April 2020 adjunct to the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Based on the spirit of the founders, the university focuses on compassion and patient care as a healthcare worker. In collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy which has trained thousands of pharmacists with high clinical abilities, the registered nurses, public health nurses, and midwives that graduate from this faculty will be trained in pharmacotherapy.
In recent years, nursing has changed drastically while responding to complex and advanced health issues in the hospitals and the local community. Nursing is a profession that supports people with various illnesses and disabilities, but to support people from various backgrounds, it is necessary to have a wide range of education and a sense of humanity. The Faculty of Nursing has established a high-quality curriculum for the nursing profession that will lead the way in healthcare and welfare with teachers who have a high expertise and ability in each field of nursing. The 21st century is known as the age of care, and it is inevitable that the role of nursing will gain more importantance. Nurses who graduate from the Faculty of Nursing, Daiichi University of Pharmacy, will be able to lead the next generation in medical care.
The Educational goals
1.Develop a nursing specialist who can lead with compassion and a rich sense of humanity.
Through an education system that fosters compassion and a desire to care for the sick, we will cultivate nursing and leadership skills that are necessary for nurses as members of society.
2. Develop the ability to practice basic nursing skills based on science.
Based on the target characteristics of each state of nursing, we will cultivate the ability to use scientifically based knowledge and technology in nursing.
3. Develop practical and problem-solving skills in health, medical care, and welfare issues that allow nurses to contribute to the healthcare community.
We will collaborate with other medical professionals to cultivate practical skills that can contribute to the healthcare community and adjust to various social conditions.
4. Develop nursing professionals who have the ability to provide support and guidance for medical treatment and to manage medications appropriately from the perspective of nursing.
Medicines play a major role in maintaining people’s quality of life in their daily lives. As a basis for nursing practice, knowledge of pharmacotherapy is not limited to knowledge of the effects and side effects of medicines, but the ability to think about optimal methods for holistic medical support to improve the QOL of patients.
In conjunction with the 60-year history of pharmacy education, the educational program has three times as many lesson credits as other universities to foster nurses who are competent in pharmacotherapy.
Six -Year Curriculum
Liberal Arts Education
The correct use of medication protects people from diseases, but its misuse exposes them to danger. A determined life viewpoint and understanding of human nature are required for pharmacists to make ethical judgments and to respect human life. Therefore, for six years students are expected to take not only subjects for general education, but also a general ethics course for health care professionals. The course of study includes humanities, social sciences, and foreign languages in the earlier years of the program, and later, courses of practical training, communication theory, medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, clinical nutrition, and emergency medical treatment.
Professional Education
From the first year through the fourth year, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skill in pharmaceutical sciences and medical pharmacy to prepare for the Pharmaceutical Common Achievement Test* in the fourth year. In the fifth year of study they receive practical training at the front lines of health care―in hospitals and pharmacies―for five months. During the final two years, they focus on more professional subjects through an advanced course of study.
